Story of the Goddess Hecate

Hecate is a prominent figure in ancient Greek mythology, often associated with magic, witchcraft, the moon, and the night. She is a complex goddess with various origins and representations.

Origins

Hecate's origins are somewhat obscure, but she is believed to have been worshipped as far back as the pre-Hellenic period. Some scholars suggest that she may have roots in the ancient Anatolian goddess Hecate, associated with the underworld and fertility. In Greek mythology, she is the daughter of the Titans Perses and Asteria, which links her to both the celestial and the chthonic realms. Hecate is often depicted as a triple goddess, representing the maiden, mother, and crone aspects of femininity. This tri-fold nature symbolises her dominion over the three realms: earth, sea, and sky. She is also known for her role as a guide for souls, particularly during transitions, such as death and rebirth.

Recognising the Call of Hecate

Many followers of Hecate believe that she calls to those who are meant to work with her. Here are some signs that you may be receiving her call:

  • Frequent encounters with the number three, such as seeing triple moon phases or three paths.

  • Increased interest in magic, witchcraft, or the occult.

  • Dreams or visions featuring Hecate or symbols associated with her, such as keys, torches, or dogs.

  • Feeling a strong connection to the moon, especially during the dark moon or full moon phases.

  • Experiencing a sense of guidance during times of transition or uncertainty.

How to Worship Hecate

Worshipping Hecate can be a deeply personal and spiritual practice. Here are some suggestions on how to honor her:

  • Create an Altar: Set up a dedicated space with symbols of Hecate, such as images, candles, and offerings.

  • Practice Rituals: Engage in rituals that honor her, especially during the dark moon. This can include lighting candles, chanting, or meditating.

  • Connect with Nature: Spend time in nature, particularly at crossroads, which are sacred to Hecate.

  • Study Her Myths: Read about her stories and attributes to deepen your understanding of her significance.

Offerings can be a meaningful way to show your devotion to Hecate. Consider the following:
